Live Art in Death Valley

January 19 – 20, 2013
at the historic
Amargosa Opera House
Death Valley Junction, CA

Please join Spoke the Hub Dancing and FlyGirl Productions at a weekend, celebratory, arts “fun-fest” for the whole family in Death Valley Junction, CA featuring guest artists of all genres from both the East and West Coasts. Through performances, workshops, and site-specific art projects, we will honor the work and legacy of dancer/painter Marta Beckett and her radical vision which blossomed in the heart of the California desert over the last 45 years. All proceeds raised by this weekend’s activities will go to benefit the upkeep and maintenance of Marta’s work and the historic Amargosa Opera House.

The LIVE ART in DEATH VALLEY Project, spearheaded by STH Founder/Artistic Director Elise Long, was dreamed up this past summer in response to a fundraising “call” from 87 year old Ms. Beckett and her Amargosa Opera House to raise desperately needed funds to save the Opera House and to continue Ms. Beckett’s singular vision in Death Valley for years to come.

Ms. Long, who grew up in Silicon Valley, CA, credits a National Geographic article she read as a high school student about Ms. Beckett and her desert Opera House enterprise as being partially responsible for inspiring the artistic road Long has since pursued herself for the last 35 years in the “outback” of Brooklyn.

In gratitude for this inspiration so many years ago, Ms. Long would like to say “thank you” to Ms. Beckett and introduce her to her “legacy” here in Brooklyn and beyond; thus, Long is gathering a gypsy band of performers, visual artists, film-makers and other creative souls who will join her in Death Valley January 19-20th, 2013 to present a benefit weekend of performances, workshops, film screenings, art exhibits and installations to help raise money for this unique place and artistic pioneer.

Artists, workshop leaders and other participants include:  Ingrid Alvarez, Ted Faye, Freestyle Repertory Theater, Carl Friberg, Erin Gottwald & John Carrafa, Mina Hamilton, David & Cindy Krimmel, Sung Uni Lee, Sulai Lopez, Nancy Lyons, Amy Noel, Kaina Quenga, Efeya Sampson, Lily Skove, Spoke The Hub Young Artists Dance/Theater, Hannah Verrill.
