“The Gowanus Arts Exchange was an abandoned soap factory when Elise Long, a choreographer, came upon it after a two-year search for a home for Spoke the Hub Dance company, which she directs.   Today a gaily colored mosaic lobby floor has replaced wood covered by three inches of water and soap. Up three flights of wooden loft stairs, past work space used by painters, sculptors, carpenters and other performing companies, there is the small but well-appointed theater that seats up to 75 people.  Six windows look out over Brooklyn rooftops and offer a glimpse of the World Trade Center Towers... “

Located several blocks from the infamous Gowanus Canal in the industrial neighborhood of the Gowanus which also hosts its own burgeoning new artists community, this spacious (almost 2,400 square feet with an open performance area of approximately 38 x 35’) and beautiful loft space surrounded by three exposed brick walls of windows, a sprung oak floor, mirrors, a sound system (CD and audio tape deck), a separate bathroom and lobby area, is on the third floor (walk-up) of a 15,000 square foot former soap factory which now provides work space for over a dozen painters, dancers, sculptors, musicians, architects and photographers.

The space offers a new theatrical lighting system, a wrap around theater curtain, and portable risers for tiered seating. The Gowanus Arts Building is accessible by the R train to Union Street at 4th Avenue, and the D, Q, 2, 3, 4 or 5 trains and the LIRR to Atlantic Avenue/ Pacific Street.
