Through gentle warm ups, deep breathing exercises, and a meditative but challenging practice of the asanas, students strengthen, tone and energize their bodies. Appropriate for beginning and intermediate students. Yoga for Young People is a traditional hatha yoga class, revised for the shorter attention span, active imaginations, and high energy of kids. Through classic yoga postures and breathing exercises, children learn to strengthen their bodies, calm their minds and rejuvenate their spirit for life. | Mina Hamilton![]() Mina HamiltonMina has been teaching yoga in Park Slope for 22 years. She has an Advanced-Level Professional certification from the Kripalu Center in MA. She is also a trained YogaTherapist. She brings intelligence, humor and creativity to her classes. Mina has studied meditation with Jon Kabat-Zinn, Thich Naht Hanh, and Jack Kornfield and loves helping her students to be both revitalized and less stressed. Her book, "Serenity To Go: Calming Techniques for Your Hectic Life" has been published in 6 languages and is a hit in Japan, where it has sold over 40,000 copies. She is a Life Coach and has a MA from Harvard University. Before starting her yoga and coaching career, she was the Executive Director of several non-profit organizations. Basic concepts and vocabulary are introduced while focus is placed on coordination and rhythm. In addition to her rigorous ballet training, she also began to hone her skills in jazz and tap in these formative years. She graduated with honors from Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas where she earned a BFA in Dance Performance as well as a BA in Psychology. She is a founding member as well as the rehearsal director for RedWall Dance Theatre (www.redwalldancetheatre.com) and has also performed with Bardos Ballet Theatre and other independent choreographers. Mindy's teaching credits include The Ballet Tech School, Marquis Studios, ArtsConnection, Brooklyn Arts Council, Brooklyn Ballet, and of course Spoke the Hub! Ms. Rebman has set original choreography on students from The Brooklyn Youth Chorus and Spoke the Hub, and has been a guest speaker and rehearsal consultant for the dance department at Long Island University. | 4:30 pm - 5:30 pm | Modern Dance I-II: Ages 9-12Modern Dance I-II: Ages 9-12Beginning with a center floor technical warm-up, dancers work to develop strength, coordination, line, balance, flexibility, and agility. Set choreography is explored in combinations across the floor, while structured improvisations honor and unleash the unique and expressive voice of each individual dancer. | Erin Gottwald![]() Erin GottwaldErin’s first choreographic masterpieces were performed barefoot in her living room and set to the music of her parents’ Motown collection: Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, The Four Tops, Gladys Knight & The Pips (among others). She enrolled in her first dance class as a toddler and for seven years continued to juggle her ballet, tap and jazz studies with baseball, soccer and figure skating. Athleticism and physicality infuse her teaching. Throughout her professional dance career, Erin has shared her passion for dance with students of all ages. While incorporating the fundamentals of ballet (alignment, posture, balance, flexibility), her classes also explore what classical training ignores: asymmetry, inversion, supple spines and the idea of a soft floor. Musicality and Muscularity are emphasized as students begin to discover their potential as performers. She has taught children and adults for over 15 years at the Bates Dance Festival, Boston Ballet, Berkeley Ballet Theatre, National Dance Institute of Santa Fe, Julia Morgan Center for the Arts, Nancy Karp and Dancers, The Dance Complex and for seven years at Spoke the Hub Dancing in Brooklyn, NY, where she is Co-Director of the Young Artists Program. She received her formative training with choreographer Holly Fairbank and at the Boston Ballet School from 1983-1994. Erin is a graduate of Bates College and London Contemporary Dance School. | 4:30 pm - 5:30 pm | Tap II: Ages 8-10Tap II: Ages 8-10One year of previous tap experience is recommended. Tap II builds on the basics by assembling more complicated steps and rhythms. | 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm | Tap III: Ages 10-12Tap III: Ages 10-12At least one year of previous tap experience required, and enrollment must be approved by the instructor. Tap III is an intermediate/advanced class that introduces complicated rhythms and coordination. Various time steps, traveling steps, and syncopated rhythms are put together in class combinations. | 5:30 pm - 6:45 pm | Ballet II: Ages 9-13Ballet II: Ages 9-13For the student who has had at least 2 years of previous ballet training. This is a rigorous class for the modern dancer that is focused on the technique and vocabulary of ballet. | 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm | Step 'n SculptStep 'n SculptStep 'n' Sculpt is a dance-based class that incorporates cardio moves on the floor and on the step. Warm-up consists of rhythmic movements, followed by simple routines that utilize a step (for better cardio/leg workout) and floor. Using small hand-weights is optional. The class concludes with integrated core work and stretching. | Karen Munson![]() Karen MunsonKAREN MUNSON currently teaches at Spoke the Hub and at private gyms throughout Manhattan. She has designed and taught fitness classes for over 20 years at Equinox and Eastern Athletic Clubs, as well as trained clients privately. She holds a BFA in Theatre from the University of Washington and multiple certifications through ACE, AFFA and REEBOK. | 3:30 pm - 4:30 pm | Creative Dance & Yoga: Ages 4-6Creative Dance & Yoga: Ages 4-6This playful class will intertwine creative movement and yoga. Children will build strength, flexibility, concentration, rhythmic, and basic motor skills in this energizing class. Incorporating the imagination, music, props, stories, nature and movement games, children develop a dance, music and yoga vocabulary as well as social skills while learning about their bodies and how to use them as a means of creative expression. Kaina trained under Hiloʻs famed kumu hula (hula teacher) Johnny Lum Ho of Halau O Ka Ua Kani Lehua and she also danced with Tihati Productions on her native Big Island. In the community, Kaina has worked with the students at Concourse House Day Care in the Bronx since 2003, teaching Native Hawaiian mele (songs) and hula (dance) to the children there. She is a Polynesian dance instructor at Spoke The Hub Dancing in Park Slope, Brooklyn and also has free Hula and Ori Tahiti dance classes throughout NYC Parks during the Spring and Summer. Kaina is among the dance Teaching Artists with Brooklyn Arts Council's Folk Feet Folk Arts and Arts In Education programming. She is skilled in Native Hawaiian language as well as in the art of traditional Hawaiian lei making.Kaina is also the Director of Nā ʻOiwi NYC, a New York-based education and advocacy group that perpetuates Native Hawaiian culture, history, and voice in New York City.
